TSRPs Deliver Essential DUI Law Training at Vermont Police Academy

Vermont Department of State’s Attorneys and Sheriffs’ (SAS) Traffic Safety Resource Prosecutors (TSRPs) Matthew Dolezal and Dennis Wygmans delivered five hours of intensive DUI law instruction at the Vermont Police Academy on May 20, 2026. The training was provided to 35 Level III students during the Academy’s Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) week.

The classroom sessions covered the critical statutory framework and caselaw that govern DUI investigations and processing. Key topics included:
  • The core elements of 23 V.S.A. § 1201
  • Implied consent law
  • The statutory right to counsel
  • Constitutional thresholds at every stage of a DUI investigation

The training wrapped up with a dynamic mock trial. Students stepped into the hot seat as the "arresting officer" in a staged DUI investigation, while TSRPs Dolezal and Wygmans ran recruits through direct and cross-examinations.

This hands-on exercise gave future officers an early, concrete look at exactly how the quality of their roadside work directly shapes the strength of the State's case in court.
